I Used to Be That Guy Who Always Said "Just Get a Sweco"

Then came the Buur Sweco incident in September 2022. Buur was a sub-brand aimed at small-scale mining operations—cheaper, fewer bells and whistles. I pushed it on a customer in Ghana who needed high-precision classification for gold recovery. The unit worked fine for bulk screening, but when they needed to separate 150-micron particles, the Buur couldn't deliver. Everything I'd read said Buur was a lighter version of the standard line. In practice, the lack of adjustable amplitude made it useless for fine-screening applications. That $18,000 order ended up scrapped, and I learned that no single Sweco model fits every job.

The Myth of Universal Superiority

From the outside, Sweco equipment looks like the gold standard: robust weldments, proven vibratory motors, global parts availability. The reality is that each family—MX separators, Supertaut screens, VREX finishing machines—targets specific niches. The LS24C is a high-capacity unit with ultrasonic deblinding—overkill for their simple tank-cleaning application. The client paid $3,200 extra for features they'd never use (surprise, surprise). Six months later, the ultrasonic transducer failed and the client blamed us for selling them something too complex. That's when I realized: overselling capability is just as destructive as underselling. The conventional wisdom is to always recommend the best model. When I Still Recommend Sweco – and When I Don't

I recommend Sweco for:

  • High-volume, continuous screening where uptime is critical (the global service network matters)
  • Applications requiring precise particle classification (the measurement technology is genuinely best-in-class)
  • Oilfield wellheads needing API 6A compliance (Sweco's 50+ years of engineering make them reliable)

I don't recommend Sweco for:

  • One-off, low-budget operations where a simpler local brand saves 40% and maintenance is unreliable
  • Fine-screening below 50 microns unless you have trained operators for ultrasonic deblinding
  • Any application where the buyer can't specify key parameters (e.g., flow rate, mesh size, connection type)

Some people argue that by saying "no" I'm turning away business. The way I see it, a rejected quote today beats a warranty claim (or a lawsuit) tomorrow. In Q2 2024, we turned down four prospects using this checklist. Two came back six months later after trying cheaper alternatives—one even admitted, "You were right, we should have gone with the Sweco." The other two never returned (which honestly confirmed we avoided a bad fit).

Here's my point: Sweco builds excellent equipment. But excellent doesn't mean universal. If you're dealing with a complex separation problem, talk to an engineer who'll tell you when you need the Sweco—and when you don't. That honesty might cost you a commission today, but it'll save you a Groves-sized disaster tomorrow.
