At 11:07 on a Thursday in March 2024, a plant manager called me about an older Sweco vibrating screen that had stopped producing clean material. The load was due at a refiner in two days, and his contract had a penalty clause. He was already preparing to pull the motor. I asked for a phone video with sound from the drive side before he touched anything. The problem was a spring hanger that had worked loose and was knocking against the housing—a $24 clamp once the right spacer was placed. The screen was running before lunch.
I coordinate service for separation and process equipment in the energy, mining, and industrial-mineral sectors. That puts me on the phone whenever a product deadline collides with an unexpected stoppage. In the last 12 months alone, I have worked through 50-plus urgent screen or separator calls. The same pattern keeps showing up: the more urgent the deadline, the more people want to skip diagnosis and start replacing parts.
This is a field checklist for that exact situation. Use it when you have hours, not weeks, to get a vibrating screen back online. I will also be honest about its limits: my experience is mostly dry and low-moisture separation in mineral, oilfield, and chemical plants. If you are on a pharmaceutical or food-grade line, stop here and call the OEM. Validation and cleaning protocols change the rules.
Do this before starting the checklist
Lock out the drive. Put your own lock on the disconnect. A vibratory screen can hold energy even after the motor stops, and springs can shift. No load-out deadline is worth a hand injury, so treat safety steps as part of the sequence rather than bureaucracy.
The second part is mental: don't decide the cause before taking any readings. If you get the diagnosis wrong, you will waste your entire window waiting for a part that wasn't needed.
The 7-check emergency field list
- Stop new feed and empty the deck. Close the feed gate or valve upstream. If the screen is still running, let it clear the current bed. If it is not moving, clean the deck manually only after it is locked out. A loaded deck hides torn cloth and makes a healthy drive sound dull. You need an empty, safe machine before you can judge anything.
- Take video with sound before you take anything apart. Stand at a safe distance and shoot 15 seconds from the drive side, then 10 seconds from the discharge end. Use the phone microphone. A loose clamp sounds different from a failing bearing, and even a basic phone mic picks up the difference. Save the file. You will need it if the machine has to be diagnosed by phone.
- Light the screen cloth from the underside. Most maintenance photos I get show the same thing: the top of the mesh. That is often the least useful angle. Tears and pinholes usually start along the tensioned edge and open upward. Put a strong flashlight underneath and look for bright spots or thin patches. A small defect that is easy to miss from above can explain a sudden rise in oversized material.
- Look at the oversize fraction for foreign material. Wear gloves and lay a sample of oversize on a clean board. Sometimes the real story is sitting right there: a matted, fuzzy ball of fibers, rust scale, or old screen debris. Operators on our routes call these woolly bears because they really look like a hairy caterpillar. A woolly bear in the oversize is not automatically a screen failure. It can mean upstream material contaminated the feed. - Check clamps, springs, and mounts before the drive. Circular vibratory screens depend on even clamp tension. Work around the full circumference, not just the side facing you. Re-torque to the values printed on the machine or in the manual. I have seen bad-motor calls where the motor was fine; a broken spring mount made the drive work too hard. That kind of problem can show up as high amps on all three phases.
- Measure running amps and listen to the drive. Put a clamp meter on each of the three phases. Compare the readings with the full-load amps on the motor nameplate. Balanced high amps usually mean a mechanical problem, such as something dragging or vibrating against the machine. Unbalanced amps point to an electrical problem; stop there and call an electrician. Write the numbers down and check motor housing temperature after five minutes.
- Decide whether this is an OEM call, then call with evidence. If you found a torn mesh, loose clamp, blocked spout, or contaminated feed, fix it in-house and test. If the drive housing, eccentric weight assembly, or base itself is damaged, that is the point to call in someone who works on those machines daily. The common mistakes I see during rush repairs
- Replacing the motor before checking cloth tension and springs. A fresh motor will not fix a torn screen or a loose spring mount. It only adds hours and cost.
- Power-washing the machine without protecting the motor junction box and bearing seals. Water ingress can turn a simple mesh fix into a $2,000 electrical repair.
- Assuming the new screen mesh is identical to the one removed. Part numbers change, and aftermarket mesh can be labeled differently. Compare old and new mesh before you tension anything.
