In September 2022 I approved a screen order that ended up costing us far more than the screen was worth. Maybe it was October—I'd have to check the log—but the number I remember is $3,800. That mistake is why I now keep a comparison checklist for every replacement screen we buy for our Sweco vibratory separators.
The Eagle vs. Sweco Test That Changed Our Buying Checklist
We run Sweco vibratory separators for fine screening at a minerals processing plant. When we needed five replacement screens, we had two options. Option one was to order through the Sweco Örnsköldsvik office in Sweden, which meant a higher initial quote and a bit more waiting. Option two was a cheaper “compatible” screen from an independent supplier. We nicknamed that screen “Eagle” because of the eagle logo printed on the box.
I want to be fair to that independent supplier. The Eagle screen was well packed, shipped on time, and the dealer answered every call. The problem was not the supplier's attitude. The problem was that “compatible with Sweco” is not the same as a screen specification.
1. The price comparison that fooled me
The Eagle quote was about $2,850 for five screens. The Sweco quote was higher—$4,180, give or take a couple hundred. On top of the price, the Eagle delivery date was two weeks sooner, and our stock of correct mesh was running low. I called it a decision based on common sense. In hindsight, I was deciding based on the first number I saw.
Trevor, the Sweco application engineer at the Örnsköldsvik office, had included something in his quote that looked strange to me: line items. Wire diameter, mesh count, open area, frame style, installation details. I thought he was padding the proposal. I have since learned to ask “what is not included?” before asking “what is the price?” A supplier who lists the details upfront may seem more expensive, but that transparency is exactly what saves you from my September mistake.
2. Henry's question: “Compatible with what?”
Henry, our senior process engineer, saw the purchase order before it went out. He asked one question: “Did they send a screen specification, or just the word compatible?” I told him it was a Sweco-style screen for a 48-inch separator, so it should fit. Henry did not argue. He simply saved the email and came back to it ten days later.
For a screen to be truly compatible with a Sweco unit, it has to match more than the outer diameter. It needs the right cloth weave, wire diameter, mesh count, open area, frame design, clamp type, and bonding method. It also needs to handle the vibration pattern and operating temperature of that specific separator. None of that appears on a box that says “fits Sweco.”
The Eagle screens arrived quickly and looked fine on the floor. But after about a week, two of the five began losing tension near the outer clamps. By day ten, we were seeing oversize particles in the screened product, so we stopped the line, removed all five screens, and re-screened a lot that had already been approved. That rework, plus the overtime and the quality paperwork, cost us close to the $3,800 I mentioned above. Actually, the accounting team's number was $3,340; I round it to $3,800 because that was the figure I had in my head when I had to explain it to the plant manager.
3. The Sweco CAO made the difference
Trevor from the Sweco Örnsköldsvik office came in to inspect the failed screens. He asked if we had received the Sweco CAO. I didn't know what CAO meant at the time, and I did not want to admit it. The Sweco CAO, as far as I now understand it, is the customer application order: the document that connects the screen to the specific separator model, its serial number, and its application conditions. It tells you exactly which screen option was designed for that machine.
It is the kind of paperwork that looks unnecessary until something goes wrong. Once we looked at the failed Eagle screen next to the Sweco CAO, the cause was obvious. The replacement used a different bonding and a thinner wire than the application specified. It may have been fine for a lower-vibration unit or a coarser separation, but it was not designed for our continuous fine-screening duty.
4. The comparison I use now
I now compare screens differently. The first question is not “who is cheaper?” It is “what specification data will I receive with the order?” If a supplier can provide a proper datasheet and can explain how the screen is built for our Sweco machine, aftermarket products deserve a fair look. If the supplier can only say “compatible,” I treat it as an incomplete quotation, not a bargain.
The second question is about total cost. The Eagle quote was 32% lower on the day. By the time we accounted for rework, it was not cheaper in any useful sense.
The third question is about support. When the Eagle screens failed, the dealer offered replacements. Trevor went further. He reviewed our application data, confirmed the machine settings, and made sure the next screens matched the Sweco CAO. That difference might not show up on a quote, but it shows up in uptime.
Would I ever buy the aftermarket screen now?
Yes, but only under conditions. If the application is coarse, low-risk, and the supplier can give me the same level of engineering data as the Sweco CAO, I would not rule them out. Some aftermarket screen makers do excellent work. The mistake is to assume that the cheaper screen is the same product because it fits in the same frame.
If you are buying for a continuous fine separation process, where a few hours of downtime stops shipments and starts quality investigations, I'd avoid that gamble. Buy the screen that comes with a traceable specification. Ask your Sweco representative for the CAO or the equivalent engineering document before you sign. Henry's question sounds simple, but it would have saved us $3,800 if I had listened.
(For anyone who prefers field notes: the checklist still sits in our maintenance folder. In the eighteen months since that order, it has caught the same “no specification” gap on three other quotes. Every gap was cheaper than the September 2022 mistake.)
