Common mistakes I still see

I’ve been on the operations side of that equipment for eight years. I’ve ordered the wrong screen, skipped the final check “because we were behind,” and paid for it in rework. This checklist is the result. It’s ten checks, and it takes about 30 minutes if you do it carefully. When to use this checklist
Use this before you run a new Sweco screen for the first time, after a rebuild, or whenever you see a change in product quality. It’s a 30-minute routine if you’re methodical, 10 minutes if you know the machine—but don’t skip the 10-minute version either.

1. Confirm the mesh and part number before you install
This is step one for a reason. I once heard from a food plant that their peanut butter separator kept blinding. The operator thought the Sweco unit was worn out. It wasn’t. The mesh on the frame was a different part number than the spec sheet—one digit different. From the outside, an 80-mesh screen and a 100-mesh screen look almost identical. The reality is they run completely differently.
Check the part number stamped on the frame, not just the tag on the packaging. If you have any doubt, measure the wire opening or compare it to a known-good screen. This takes 2 minutes and would have saved us a $1,400 re-bagging job in 2022.
2. Re-tension after 30 minutes
New screen cloth stretches more than most people expect. I’ve seen a 48-inch Sweco screen go from properly tensioned to loose in the first half hour of running. Tighten it, run it, stop, then tighten it again. Mark the frame with a paint pen after the second tension so you know it’s done.
3. Check motor weight phase orientation
The vibration pattern depends on where the eccentric weights are set. If someone worked on the motor, the weights can end up in a different phase. The screen still rotates, but the product doesn’t travel the way it should. Compare the position marks to the manual before startup.
4. Inspect seals for pinch and dry rot
Separator seals are cheap, but they cause expensive contamination when they fail. Look for pinch marks, cracks, and hard spots. If a seal has been sitting in a drawer for two years, replace it anyway.
5. Run a five-minute dry test
I used to think dry tests were overkill. Then a loose discharge spout sprayed slurry onto the floor during a live run. Now I always run the unit with no material first. Watch the material pattern, listen for ticking, and confirm the discharge spout is secure. You can catch most setup issues in those five minutes.
6. Verify thread type and gauge on oilfield wellhead parts
This one is for the oilfield side. For wellhead connections, the thread type has to match the client’s spec. I knew I should check thread gauges before shipping, but I thought “we’ve done this before.” That was the one time the client used a different API group. Wrong threads on a $2,100 assembly—straight back to the shop.
Keep the current API specification sheet near the bench. Match the thread gauge, not just the thread size.
7. Log any change
Most screen problems don’t happen because of a sudden failure. They happen after a change: new screen supplier, new feed rate, new operator, new lube. Keep a simple log on the equipment sheet. If the product moves differently today than yesterday, the log tells you where to start.
8. Test with actual material at low feed
Low feed is different from dry test. It lets you see how the material spreads across the screen before it builds up. On a 48-inch unit, we once skipped this and went straight to full production. The material short-circuited to the oversize discharge because the screen wasn’t seated properly. A 2-minute check would have caught it; we spent 2 hours cleaning up instead.
9. Keep a known-good spare kit
Stock one screen, one seal set, and one spring for each Sweco unit. The first time we didn’t, a bad seal became a 3-day shutdown because the local distributor didn’t have the size in stock. A small shelf full of parts is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
10. Record vibration readings monthly
I didn’t believe in baseline vibration data until our motor failed on a Sunday and I had no reading to compare against. The repair cost $3,100 and took six days. Now we record vibration values on the first of every month. A 15% jump tells you to start planning maintenance before the failure.
Common mistakes I still see
More often than not, these mistakes happen on rush orders. The checklist isn’t a bureaucratic burden—it’s a memory backup. Here are the things that get skipped first:
- Forgetting to re-tension after the warm-up run.
- Installing a replacement screen without checking the part number.
- Assuming the previous shift already did the dry test. If you didn’t see it, do it again.
- Ignoring small vibration changes because “it still runs.”
