If you're getting ready to order SWECO vibratory finishing machines directly, this checklist is for you. It's not for the person who wants a brochure. It's for the person who signs the purchase order and then has to explain why the machine doesn't fit.
I've been handling equipment orders for mining, finishing, and screening operations for six years. In that time, I've personally made and documented nine significant mistakes, totaling roughly $32,000 in wasted budget, rework, and avoidable downtime. I maintain our team's ordering checklist now. This is the checklist.

When I first started working with SWECO vibratory finishing machine factories, I assumed the factory's application engineer would catch anything I left out. I thought, 'They've seen thousands of orders. They know what I mean.' That assumption is expensive. The factory quotes what you write, not what you meant.
What you put in the RFQ is what the factory puts in the quote. The more you leave vague, the more they have to guess, and their guess won't match your site.
Step 1: Define the process before you name a machine
I know the easiest thing to do is write 'SWECO mill' in an email and hit send. I've done it. It's the wrong place to start.
Before you contact anybody, answer a few questions:
- What material exactly are you processing? Include particle size, moisture, and temperature if it matters.
- Are you looking for a vibratory finishing machine for deburring and polishing, or a SWECO grinding mill?
- Wet or dry? Batch or continuous?
- What throughput do you need per hour? Not what you hope, what you actually need.
- What's the upstream and downstream process? The machine has to connect to something.
I remember my first year, asking for 'a SWECO mill.' The sales engineer asked, 'Which one?' I said, 'The mill one.' He didn't laugh, but I still cringe. There are multiple SWECO mill configurations. 'Mill' alone is not a specification.
Step 2: Confirm the machine family and model range
SWECO makes more than one type of equipment. Round separators, rectangular separators, vibratory finishing mills, grinding mills, replacement screens, and oilfield wellhead equipment. They share a brand name, but they don't share a sizing approach.
'SWECO vibratory finishing machine' is a good start, but it's not enough. Write down the model family, the tub size or chamber volume, and the media or liner options. If you're working with a factory representative, ask them to confirm the model in writing before you invite them to quote.
One of my early mistakes was sending a request for a 'SWECO vibratory finishing machine' and getting a quote for a separator. The rep wasn't trying to be difficult. My RFQ was too generic. Once I added the part geometry and cycle time, the conversation changed.
Step 3: Send your site constraints, not just your floor plan
'It looked fine on my screen.' That sentence has cost me more money than any equipment failure. A machine can fit on the floor plan and still not fit in the building.
Check these before you order:
- Door opening width and height
- Ceiling height for lifting the discharge bowl or top cover
- Clearance for access doors and maintenance panels
- Rigging path from where the truck can park to the final location
- Floor load rating and vibration isolation requirements
The factory doesn't know your ceiling is eight feet. They don't know the transformer is on the other side of the plant. Tell them. A 10-minute site sketch can prevent a $1,200 rigging conversation later.
Step 4: Verify electrical, motor, and any hazardous-area requirements
This is the step that looks boring. It's also the step that people forget when they're hungry for a fast quote.
Here's the thing: a SWECO mill might be perfect for your process, but if you're in a dusty environment or an area that requires explosion-proof equipment, the motor, starter, and control panel all change. So do the drawings, the lead time, and the price.
Include these on the RFQ:
- Voltage, phase, and frequency at your site, like 480V/60Hz or 400V/50Hz
- Motor rating and starter type
- ATEX or other area classification, if applicable
- Washdown requirements, IP rating, or chemical resistance
- Noise limits if the machine will sit near operators for eight hours
I lost $2,300 once because I approved a machine with a manual starter when our line needed a motor starter with remote start capability. It was in the drawings. I didn't look at the drawings carefully. That's on me.
Step 5: Check the general arrangement drawing, not just the purchase order
This is the most important step. Trust me on this one.
In September 2022, we ordered what I thought was the correct SWECO mill. The purchase order line item said the right thing. The price was what I expected. The delivery date was workable. On paper, everything was fine.
The problem was the general arrangement drawing. The inlet adapter was shown on the opposite side of the machine from where our feed pipe dropped. It was right there in small print, and I approved it anyway. When the machine arrived, the mismatch was obvious. The adapter kit, extra fabrication, and two-week delay cost about $3,100 and a chunk of credibility with the production manager.
Now I never approve an order without a marked-up drawing that shows our pipe, our foundation bolt location, and our access area. I check every nozzle and connection. If something is wrong, I'd rather catch it in the factory than on the plant floor.
Step 6: Clarify exactly what 'factory direct' includes
Buying direct from a SWECO factory or an authorized SWECO service center can simplify things. But 'direct' doesn't automatically mean 'everything included.'
Ask these questions before you sign:
- Does the quoted price include the motor, starter, and electrics, or are they separate?
- Are the screen pack, media, clamps, and liners included?
- Does the price include the vibration isolation base or leveling feet?
- Is shipping, insurance, customs, and final positioning included?
- Who supplies the commissioning engineer, and is that time included?
To be fair, most reps will walk you through the scope if you ask. But if you don't ask, you're leaving it to assumption. Assumptions are how you end up with a machine that's quote-ready but not plant-ready.
Step 7: Plan commissioning before the truck arrives
I used to think commissioning was a formality. Then I stood next to a $70,000 machine that wouldn't start because someone had left the transit clamp engaged. Not a factory defect. Not a bad spec. A transit clamp. A lesson learned the hard way.
Add these to your installation week:
- Inspect the crate and take photos before opening
- Compare serial numbers on the machine, packing list, and order confirmation
- Check for visible damage to the bowl, springs, motor, and control box
- Remove all transit clamps and locking devices. This one sounds ridiculous, but it happens.
- Check lubrication levels and tighten all bolts to the specified torque
- Run the machine without media first, then add media in stages
- Monitor vibration, temperature, and noise during the first hour
I'd rather spend 45 minutes doing these checks than 45 minutes explaining to the plant manager why the new mill is down.
Common mistakes that still show up
Rushing because you're hungry for an answer
An applications engineer named Jonah once told me: 'You're hungry for a fast answer, and that's exactly when omissions happen. Slow down. Send me the drawing, not the machine name.'
Jonah was right. The most expensive mistakes in my career happened when I was in a hurry. The checklist is my way of forcing a pause.
Comparing things that aren't comparable
I once got forwarded a search snippet about 'Credelio Quattro vs Simparica' from a colleague who thought it might relate to a SWECO specification. It doesn't. That's a flea and tick medication comparison, not a vibratory equipment comparison. I'm not a veterinarian, and that's not my industry.
The bigger point is to be careful about where your specification comes from. When you're looking at SWECO vibratory finishing machines, use SWECO's technical data, a test report with your material, and a drawing that matches your plant. Don't rely on an internet search that lumps together unrelated phrases.
Making the checklist the end of the conversation
The checklist catches the obvious stuff. It doesn't replace the conversation with the SWECO application engineer. If their factory test suggests a different media size, listen. They've probably seen the same material a hundred times.

Ordering a SWECO vibratory finishing machine or SWECO mill directly from a factory is not hard if you slow down. Seven steps. Process data, machine family, site constraints, electrical specs, drawings, scope, and commissioning.
