Two weeks ago, our plant shut down

I’m the materials manager for a mid-size mineral processing facility. We run about 400 tons of material a day through various vibratory screens—sieving, classifying, dewatering. The upside of going cheap was saving $3,200. The risk was missing the shipping deadline if the part failed. I kept asking myself: is $3,200 worth potentially losing a client worth $90k annually? Calculated the worst case: complete redo at $4,800 plus lost production ($6k per hour). Best case: saves $3,200. The expected value said maybe go for it, but the downside felt catastrophic.

I called the general fabricator back. “Your part fits. But is your application engineer certified on vibratory separation?” Pause. “Our engineers have 20 years in structural steel. Screens are similar.” Similar. That word.

The outcome

We went with Sweco. Expensive. The part arrived in 72 hours—a custom assembly because the isolator springs had sagged 5% since install (something only caught by the site visit). The engineer oversaw the installation. We shipped on time.

What most people don't realize is that screen failure isn't just about the screen. The drive motor, the base frame, the discharge chute—they all interact. A general fabricator can build the part. Reality check: What I learned

The fabricator who boasted “we do it all” might be great for frames or ducts. But for something with dynamics—like vibratory separation—I’d rather work with a specialist who knows their boundaries. The Sweco engineer literally told us during the handover: “For our specific installation, these are the three failure modes I’d monitor. If you see any of these, call us—don't go back to a general machinist.” That honesty earned my trust for every other decision.

So if you're an admin buyer or plant manager who's ever had a vendor say “we can do it all,” ask them: What's your specific application experience with vibratory screens? When was the last time you tuned a unit in our size range? If the answer is vague, it's a red flag.

Specialists aren’t cheap. But they know what they don’t know. And sometimes, that’s worth more than the savings.
